TheGymPress had very humble beginnings, but its rapid expansion testifies to the unity, curiosity, and commitment of our community of coaches, scientists, sportsman and sportswomen, and gymnastics fans. We are proud to be able to share the story with you:
In 2007 TheGymPress appeared for the first time. Back then it was an independent newsletter designed to provide the small but dispersed community of gymnastics coaches in New Zealand with a medium for networking and exchanging knowledge. The hope was to foster a stronger sense of a national gymnastics culture and promote uniformity across performance and safety standards by improving communication and cooperation between national regions
Thanks to both local and international interest the project quickly grew from an email newsletter into an open source publication for gymnastics coaches worldwide. Now knowledge and experience was being exchanged by people from around the world and there was clearly a thirst for more. The new publication was entitled TheGymPress: Journal of Gymnastics Education and Development. Since the start there have been editorial contributions from gymnastics coaches and physical conditioning practitioners from the USA, Canada, and the UK (and we hope non-Anglophone members will also contribute in the future as we are able to provide translation services in French and Italian). These contributions enriched and expanded the scope of the publication so that in one year interest had grown from 30 downloads per issue to over a 1000.
Further changes followed to better address the needs of our expending community. In 2008 TheGymPress was restructured from an e-publication website into a multi-media custom content website dedicated to providing gymnastics coaching resources. The former e-publication known as TheGymPress was renamed Gym Coach, and a number of other features were added:
In spite of growth and change there is one thing that remains fundamental: our Mission Statement.
“ TheGymPress serves as a forum for education, networking, promotion of research, and public service in the field of gymnastics and physical conditioning. TheGymPress is committed to providing continuing education and resources to the gymnastics community, as well as the public at large, on the subject of efficient training for gymnastics and physical conditioning more generally. Our hope is that TheGymPress will improve the performance and safety of participants in artistic gymnastics and related sports“
And so that’s the story so far. It isn’t finished however because we hope you will join and become a part of the next turn it will take on its path to realizing the goals of our community.
Welcome!
